Remembering Peter Boyle

The motion picture industry lost one of its most versatile performers Dec. 12, 2006 as Peter Boyle died at New York's Presbyterian Hospital. Aged 71, Boyle was a long-time sufferer of multiple myeloma and heart disease.

Although most folks born after 1970 know him primarily for his role on Everybody Loves Raymond, as an actor, he appeared in many films and TV shows - including several science fiction and fantasy works (see below).

The actor gained acclaim (and an Emmy) after his guest starring role on The X-Files as a psychic in the episode. "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose." His unique gift of high drama and low comedy played out well in an episode that brought belly laughs with implications of Mulder's "alone time" habits as Boyle's character informs Mulder of how the agent will die:

Clyde: You know, there are worse ways to go, but I can't think of a more undignified one than auto-erotic asphyxiation.

Mulder: Why are you telling me that?

That same episode Boyle's character also plumbed tender and heartbreakingly poignant moments with Scully and his character's death.

Perhaps, Boyles best-loved performance is that of The Monster in the 1974 flick, Young Frankenstein, where he got rave reviews and a very large fan base as the first tap dancing and singing Frankenstein's monster. Others note him for the infamous teeter-totter scene.

Boyle currently can be seen in Santa Claus 3: The Escape Clause as Father Time.

David Speakman

David Speakman - known in fannish circles as Davodd - is recovering from almost 20 years as a professional writer and journalist in mainstream print and broadcasting. He recently "retired" from journalism, citing that too many mega-mergers caused news focus to shift from serving the public interest to serving up eyeballs to advertisers. Currently he works full time as a paralegal while attending night law school. A member of N3F on and off since 1984, David's fannish activities in recent days have been curtailed due to time and budget constraints of being a law school student; although he does manage to squeeze in episodes of Battlestar Galactica, issues of Weird Tales magazine and an odd superhero movie "now and then."
