Sci Fi/Fantasy movie weekend preview: ‘Doom,’ ‘Stay’

Two weekends before Halloween has traditionally been the time of the year that film studios unleash their creepy movies and monster flicks upon the viewing audience.

This year, two big-budget films are footing the bill: Doom, inspired by the video game series of the same name, and Stay, a modern ghost story. Each movie opens nationwide on October 21.

Details of the films follow:

Doom (2005)
In this video game-to-movie, look for great special effects with tons of gore and violence. Do not look for the best acting or writing. Most likely will be big with male teenagers and frat boys of all ages - because they blow things up "real good."

MPAA Rating: R
Genre: Science Fiction, Horror
Plot: A filmed version of the video game, our heroes must rid the planet of creatures that seem to come straight from hell.
Notable Cast: The Rock (Mummy Returns, The Scorpion King)
Studio: Universal

Stay (2005)
With the Hollywood A-list acting, writing and directing talent, this film should be the choice for chills among the more mature, intelligent and female movie goers .

MPAA Rating: R
Genre: Supernatural Fantasy, Thriller
Plot: Young professor tries to prevent a student's suicide and stumbles upon the hidden world between life and death.
Notable Cast: Ewan McGregor (The Island, Young "Obi Wan" in Star Wars Prequels), Naomi Watts (The Ring, The Ring Two), Ryan Gosling (Young Hercules)
Notable Crew:
Writer: David Benioff (Troy)
Director: Marc Forster (Finding Neverland, Monster's Ball)
Studio: 20th Century Fox

He recently "retired" from journalism, citing that too many mega-mergers caused news focus to shift from serving the public interest to serving up eyeballs to advertisers. Currently he works full time as a paralegal while attending night law school. A member of N3F on and off since 1984, David's fannish activities in recent days have been curtailed due to time and budget constraints of being a law school student; although he does manage to squeeze in episodes of Battlestar Galactica, issues of Weird Tales magazine and an odd superhero movie "now and then."
