Axe falls on ‘Nightstalker,’ ABC not to air end of cliffhanger

With a cancelation notice by ABC, Nightstalker became the first freshman sci-fi/fantasy show of the 2005-2006 season to be cancelled. The show only lasted for six episodes. Its last episode was the first part of a two-part cliffhanger. ABC says it has no plans to air the second half.

The series also is one of the few ABC shows that are being offered on Apple's iPod video store. It isn't clear if the unaired episodes of Nightstalker will be available via Apple or if the entire series will be pulled off the online outlet.

"I am enormously grateful for the experience and the opportunity given me by the network and Touchstone Television. I would like to thank our amazingly talented cast, wonderful crew, killer post-production department, terrific writing staff," series creator Frank Spotnitz said in on his blog.

Airing opposite CSI and The Apprentice, Nightstalker has an average of 5.5 million viewers for is first five episodes. When it returned with a sixth episode last Thursday, after being preempted by a showing of the film Pirates of the Caribbean two weeks ago, it had fewer than 4 million viewers tuning in.

That made it the least-watched series on ABC.

For the short-term ABC will replace the Nightstalker timeslot with expanded versions of its Primetime news magazine or movies from the Disney library.
